Marina – Zarzuela

Zarzuela is a popular form of opera or operetta in Spanish, usually with many choruses and dance rhythms. It is currently on everyone’s lips and is becoming increasingly popular internationally. This is not least due to our permanent conductor José Miguel Pérez-Sierra, who made his debut as the new musical director of the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid last year with this very opera. He had a fantastic cast for it, including Pietro Spagnoli and Celso Albelo. In the meantime, José Miguel has formed an alliance with Christoph Loy, one of Europe’s most important opera directors, and is proposing zarzuelas not only in Krakow, but also in Basel, at the Theater an der Wien, in Berlin and in the USA. Zarzuela is en vogue! Bad Wildbad is the perfect place to propose this work, and so we come to this unique performance with a top-class cast. Marina by Emilio Arrieta was first performed in Madrid in 1855 as a two-act zarzuela and was reworked into a three-act opera in 1871.

Together with ¡Rossini olé!, this is a refreshingly spirited Spanish highlight in the programme.
