Celebrating the 35th Belcanto Opera Festival: "Rossini in Wildbad"
This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Belcanto Opera Festival, held from July 18 to July 28, 2024, in the scenic locale of Wildbad. The festival, aptly themed “Rossini in Wildbad,” promises an immersive experience into the world of classical opera, featuring three operas, three grand concerts, and a series of engaging activities around these events.
The festival kicks off on July 18 with a spectacular opening concert on the tower of the treetop walkway, setting a majestic tone for the days to follow. The very next day, attendees will witness the modern premiere of “Masaniello,” a French opera by Rossini’s close friend and Neapolitan composer Michele Carafa. This opera is a rare gem not frequently performed in the modern era, making it a highlight of the festival.
On July 20, the festival will be graced by the presence of Marina Viotti, a soprano whose remarkable career began right here in Wildbad. The evening will continue with the premiere of “Le Comte Ory,” Rossini’s only French comedy, adding a lighthearted contrast to the festival lineup. The weekend excitement peaks on July 21 with the debut of Rossini’s enduring work “L’Italiana in Algeri” at the Royal Spa Theatre, a piece celebrated for its vibrant character and spirited music.
The second week of the festival is no less thrilling, with a special concert evening dedicated to the great tenor David, featuring a collection of rare arias and premiere performances. The festival’s format this year introduces two complete cycles of all operas with varied concert programs, allowing attendees to experience the breadth of Rossini’s genius fully.
The festival concludes on July 28 with a serene forest concert, promising a beautifully curated selection of music. Not to be overlooked are the “Rossini & Co” concerts by the Academy BelCanto, which celebrate the legacy of Rossini and his contemporaries.
This year’s Belcanto Opera Festival not only offers a rich schedule of performances but also ensures an innovative approach by offering different concert experiences within the two festival blocks. Whether you are a long-time opera enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, “Rossini in Wildbad” provides a perfect backdrop to experience the grandeur of bel canto in an idyllic setting.
